An award in the amount
of $25,000 was provided to support islet cell transplantation trials
at the Islet Cell Transplantation Lab at the Barbara Davis Center.
This support will ensure an on-call surgeon is available to help
in the procurement of pancreases for transplantation. Many of the
researchers and physicians in this promising trial have children
with diabetes or they have Type I diabetes themselves. Most of the
team was trained at Edmonton. This trial will compare the success
of islet cell transplantation in Type I patients and patients with
CFRD. This will provide information on the role of autoimmunity
in transplantation success.
