Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation:
Part of our focus this year has been on funding autologous (self) stem cell research. This is non-controversial as the stem cells come from the person who is undergoing the reinfusion procedure. We have been providing funding for the type 1 patients undergoing this unique procedure as well as providing support for travel grants to facilitate collaboration with U.S. researchers. Both type 1 and type 2 patients have been undergoing the procedure which involves removing stem cells and then reinfusing them back into the tail of the pancreas. There have been over 200 procedures, and about 1/4 of those are type 1 patients. There have been no severe adverse events reported. Our funding has been used to assist the type 1 patients, but type 2 patients are also reported to be seeing benefit.
We hope to raise additional funds to assist with this procedure and additional collaboration efforts.
Porcine Islet Cell Transplantation:
We are working to bring Dr. Robert Elliott to the U.S. in September to discuss additional collaboration. His herd of pigs has been raised in a pristine environment, and plans are underway for human transplantation in some countries.

We were pleased this year to learn that the initial funding we provided for the first reinfusion of cord blood has blossomed into a very exciting clinical trial. The researchers are still recruiting patients in Gainesville.

he
Children With Diabetes Foundation is expressing their appreciation
for the exciting progress in the field of encapsulated porcine
islet xenotransplantation. The majority of our donors are parents
of children with diabetes, and we are dedicated to using their
donations in the most promising areas of research. We look forward
to Dr. Elliott's presentation at the xenotransplantation meeting
in Chicago in September and to his continued progress in large
animals and humans.
Our mission is to assist
people living with diabetes and support the work of scientists
and physicians throughout the world searching for a cure. With
your help, we won't give up, and together we will find a cure.
A grant in the amount of $10,000 (U.S. Dollars) is being wired
to Diatranz to assist in the transport of islets.

Children With Diabetes
Foundation funded a clinical study of the GlucoWatch®
Biographer on children and adolescents with diabetes
he
Children With Diabetes Foundation is excited about funding trials
using continuous and alarmable monitoring. This new technology
will prevent hospitalizations and provide information which will
allow patients to lower their blood glucose levels safely. This
should lead to significant cost savings and an immediate improvement
in the quality of life for people with diabetes.
The
study involving children with Type I diabetes will evaluate whether
ongoing information provided by the GlucoWatch® Biographer
can lead
to improved control of glucose levels. You can check out our press
release on the study or view the watch at the Cygnus website

Children With Diabetes
Foundation Presents Prevention of Type I Award to Michael Clare-Salzler,
M.D. in Memory of Justin and Jonathan Janolis
he
Children With Diabetes Foundation was pleased to present $10,000
in memory of brothers, Justin Janolis, 10, and Jonathan Janolis,
5 to Dr Michael Clare-Salzler at the University of Florida. We
hope this donation will bring comfort to their parents and their
surviving seven year old brother. All three of the Janolis boys
were diagnosed with Type I diabetes. These funds can be used to
make progress in work toward the
goal of preserving beta cell function in newly diagnosed patients
and those identified at high risk of getting diabetes. Dr. Clare-Salzler's
lab is working to evaluate candidate genes, determine whether
cell death in islet infiltrating cells establishes tolerance,
and establish factors helping cell death in islet infiltrating
cells which could lead to prevention or reversal of this devastating
disease in a model of Type I diabetes.
(Justin
and Jonathan's untimely deaths were not diabetes related. They
were the result of a tragic accident.)
